Rich Art and Culture in St. Petersburg

Russian Literature

The history of St. Petersburg’s literature is very rich indeed. It is in this Russian city where literary greats like Prokofiev, Dostoevsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Pushkin and Shostakovich live and worked. Russian literature giant Pushkin is still widely known and admired not only by people of St. Petersburg but from people around the world as well. Dostoevsky, on the other hand, wrote about St. Petersburg’s sad reality, the slums and poverty in his novel Crime and Punishment. Nikolai Gogol, the father of modern Russian realism described 19th century St. Petersburg in his novels as a beautiful city in the morning, with the pleasant smell of bread in the air.

Art Culture

The post-Soviet Russia wasn’t flourishing until the end of 1991, when sponsors and local businessmen came together to breathe new life in the field of arts in St. Petersburg. Theater life in St Petersburg is currently flourishing. The Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre stages classical performances on Russian drama. They are famous for their intricately designed costumes and excellent theater performances.
