The Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

Built to immortalize Alexander II following his assassination in 1881, this magnificent church with Italian pink marble floors and numerous mosaics was modeled after 16th and 17th century churches, contrasting sharply with the prevailing architectural styles.

This marvelous Russian- style church was constructed between 1883 and 1907; the church was designed in the spirit of sixteenth- and seventeenth century Russian architecture, inspired particularly by St Basil's Cathedral on Red Square in Moscow. The image of the Savior in this Cathedral reflects not so much the cult aspect, but the political, historical, artistic, stylistic importance of the monument.

Today, the church's onion domes have been newly gilded and its interiors painstakingly restored to their former glory and the church is open to the public.

The cathedral boasts a luxurious and rich decor, ornamental architraves, frames, corbels, ceramic tiles, and colored glazed tiles. Five cupolas of the church, some 1000 square meters in area are covered with jewelry enamel. The belfry is decorated with mosaic coats- of- arms of cities and regions of the Russian empire.

Hours: Open Daily; 11.00 - 18.00. Closed on Wednesday.
