Kafe Idiot

Named after the novel by the great writer Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Idiot is a favorite hangout for actors, artists, musicians and visitors to the city, attracted by the homely atmosphere, good food, and diversions such as chess and backgammon.


The Idiot's extensive menu of Russian and vegetarian cooking includes dishes with a Dostoevsky theme, such as the Raskolnikov salad (named after the hero of Crime and Punishment) and a cocktail called Crime and Punishment.

Ordering one of the vat- sized cappuccinos, accompanied by the complementary measure of vodka, will induce such sanguinity that you might well be encouraged to make a bedroom of the place for the night.

Hear Ella Fitzgerald crooning to you from the background and your eyelids could well become too heavy to resist.

The four rooms that make up the Idiot are chock- full of antiques that give it a timeless feel, including ancient sewing machines and typewriters and copper dishes. One room houses a small library of English- language books. Idiot- brand souvenirs are also on sale.
