State Circus

St. Petersburg State Circus was the first Russian circus built in stone in 1877. Up to the revolution of 1917 this circus was named after the famous Italian artist of the XIX century Gaetano Cinizelli who had been the initiator of the building and later the owner and director of the circus.

The building of the new circus stunned the people by its perfect proportions and charming decorations: figures of muses in arch- shaped windows, allegoric sculpture group in the centre of ledge with theatrical masks, front ones with glorifies of horse heads.

Its interior was adorned by gold imitations, pink velvet, mirrors, crystal lamps, with the writing on the shade "with different typical images from voltage world".

The best actors from all over the world performed there - famous clowns Billi Gaiden and Jakomino, grotesque horsewoman Ms. Adel and air gymnast Ms. Zinobia, the favorite of aristocracy the rider James Fillis, Russian clowns, trainers and brothers Anatoly and Vladimir Durovy. Smart decorated pantomimes and water show - "Chinderella", "Robert and Beltram", Fiametta - the queen of robbers", "Nibelungs" and others were held in the circus.
