Winter sports are the most popular activities in St Petersburg. The city has several ice hockey teams, the best of which is SKA St Petersburg, who also play at the Kirov Stadium.
"SKA" hockey team was formed in the year 1946. Since 1946- 47 "SKA" has participated in every Russian championship. "SKA" is the leading hockey team of Saint- Petersburg.
SKA is not among the best known Russian hockey clubs - certainly its reputation pales to that of the old Spartak but Russia's most European city sends enthusiastic fans to the sparkling new Ice Palace to see the St. Petersburg team play rivals from across Russia.
The schedule runs from early September to mid- February, followed by the playoffs. Ice hockey is played on a rectangular rink with curved corners whose length may vary from 184 to 200 ft, its width from 85 to 98 feet.
There are plenty of opportunities for cross- country skiing and the many canals freeze in winter to provide perfect ice skating. The waterways are also the most popular recreation in the summer months, when boating takes over from skating and sledging.
