FC Zenit is a Russian football club, based in Saint Petersburg. FC Zenit was found in May 1925. Since 1936, the club had been named 'Stalinets'. In 1940, it found the present name, 'Zenit'.
Zenit Football Club traces its history back to May 1925, when a football team was established at the Leningrad Metal Works named after Stalin. In its early formative years, the team mainly played at local tournaments.
Zenit won their first honors in 1944, claiming the war- time USSR Cup after defeating CDKA in the well- attended final. The club was always adored in Leningrad but wasn't able to make much of an impact in the Soviet League.
The Eighties have finally brought some glory to the Northern Capital: the bronze medal in 1980, Soviet Cup Final 1984 and, finally, the Championship in 1984 has established its prestige.
Zenit is the focus of great civic pride in St. Petersburg. At present the club plays home games at Petrovsky Stadium, which is one of the best sport complexes in Russia, famous in Europe and throughout the world. Training takes place at a base equipped with several football grounds and all the facilities necessary for fruitful work.
