Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress was constructed during the reign of Peter the Great. It is the first building of St. Petersburg. First it was built in earth and wood, but by the middle of the 18th century it was rebuilt in stone.

Today the fortress is one of St. Petersburg's major tourist attractions and has become the emblem of the city. It is also home to the headquarters of the St. Petersburg City History Museum, which displays collections throughout the fortress complex. The Peter and Paul Fortress is the historical nucleus of Petersburg, military, engineering, architectural and historical complex.

Six bastions of the fortress were named in honor of Peter I and his assistants, who personally directed the building - the Tsar, the Menshikov, the Golovin, the Zotov, the Trubetskoi and the Naryshkin.
The united architectural ensemble includes: fortification system - fortress walls, curtains, bastions and ravelins; the Parade Peter Gate, the Bathhouse and the arch.

In the centre of the ensemble there is the Peter and Paul Cathedral. Its bell- tower served as a city Clock tower. It became a symbol of establishment of a new capital of Russia on seaside lands.
