For longer journeys, or if you are in a hurry, the metro is the most efficient transport. The Saint Petersburg Metro is an underground rapid transit system in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Formerly known as Leningrad Metro, the system exhibits many typical Soviet designs and features vivid decorations and artwork.

Due to the city's unique geology, the Saint Petersburg Metro is also one of the deepest metro systems in the world. There are 58 underground stations in St Petersburg forming 4 lines of the Metro Network.

Normally trains arrive every 2- 4 minutes. The stations open at 5:45 a.m. and close between midnight and 0:30 a.m. You can transfer from one line to another until 0:15 a.m. All signs are in Cyrillic print but in the ground entrance hall of each station there are metro maps with in Latin. St. Petersburg's metro looks more impressive than most other subways and undergrounds of the world. Despite the recent funding problems the metro is still the most reliable city transport.

You can pay either by a monthly pass (called kartochka or proyezdnoy) or you pay by tokens, which can be purchased at special counters or booths located at every station.
