Taxi

Taxis are the fastest mode of transportation in the city. Taxis are 14- 20 seat vans, usually white or yellow, always with a route number plate. There are no regular stops, you have to tell the driver when you want to quit or hand out while on the roadside to stop one.

There are several types of taxis: official taxis, private taxis, and private cars. Official (and private) taxis can be identified by a "T" sign on the side or a "TAXI" sign on the roof of the car, a lot of them are yellow or white "Volga" type cars.

For foreigners the standard charge for a cab arranged by a hotel's taxi- service will be around to most places, and for longer trips, such as to or from the airport it may cost - 50.

It goes without saying that the most convenient form of transportation in a city which you do not know well is the taxi. The majority of the city's taxis are "Volgas" marked with the word "TAXI" or with black squares on the roof and doors (there are 1,200 such taxis in St. Petersburg).

A green light lit up on the car's windshield means that a taxi is for hire. To get a taxi to stop, raise your hand decisively. Taxis may also be hired at taxi ranks outside stations and hotels.
